Best Vacation Rentals in Big Sky: Where to Stay for Your Montana Getaway

What are the best vacation rentals in Big Sky, you ask?

That’s the thing—they’re everywhere!

Big Sky is full of beautiful vacation rentals, from slope-side condos and mountain-view townhomes to quiet cabins tucked into the trees. But the best vacation rentals in Big Sky are not one-size-fits-all. The right choice depends on your trip, your group, your itinerary, and how much energy you want to spend getting from “coffee in pajamas” to “adventure mode.”

So instead of asking, “What are the best vacation rentals in Big Sky?” the better question is: How do I pick the best Big Sky vacation rental for the way I actually want to vacation?

That’s where we come in (hello!).

At Two Pines Properties, we offer Big Sky vacation rentals across the area, so you can choose the stay that fits your vision of a Montana getaway. Whether you’re here to ski, hike, mountain bike, soak in a hot tub, wrangle kids into snow pants, or simply stare at Lone Peak while holding a very strong cup of coffee, this guide will help you figure out where to stay in Big Sky and what type of rental makes the most sense.

Let’s find your home base. Bonus points if it comes with mountain views and a hot tub.

A Quick Overview of Big Sky: The Perfect Mountain Escape

Big Sky, Montana, is the kind of place that makes people say things like, “Wait, why don’t we live here?” at least three times per trip.

Set among rugged peaks, open meadows, forested trails, and some of the best skiing in the country, Big Sky is built for travelers who want a vacation with room to breathe. For winter activities, Big Sky’s a dream for skiers and snowboarders heading to Big Sky Resort. In the summer, it turns into a playground for hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, ziplining, golfing, and day trips to Yellowstone National Park.

But Big Sky is also spread out. This is not a “park once and walk everywhere” destination for every traveler. The area includes mountain neighborhoods, meadow communities, resort hubs, tucked-away private homes, and scenic pockets that each offer a different experience.

That’s why choosing the right vacation rental matters. A rental near the resort might be perfect for first-chair skiers. A Town Center stay might be better for families who want restaurants, groceries, and activities close by. A secluded cabin might be the dream if your goal is quiet mornings, big views, and pretending your inbox does not exist.

The best Big Sky rentals make your trip easier, not more complicated.

Areas to Stay in Big Sky by Location

Before you fall in love with a listing photo, take a minute to think about location. Big Sky has several distinct areas, and each one comes with its own personality.

Big Sky Resort

If your vacation revolves around skiing, snowboarding, ziplining, scenic lift rides, or being close to the mountain action, staying near Big Sky Resort is a strong choice.

Big Sky Resort is known for the Biggest Skiing in America, with thousands of skiable acres, major vertical drop, and terrain for every skill level. During the winter, this area puts you close to lifts, ski school, rentals, restaurants, bars, and retail shops. During the summer, the resort becomes a basecamp for outdoor adventure, including scenic lift rides, zipline tours, guided activities, and easy access to mountain fun.

This area is best for travelers who want convenience and quick access to activities. If your dream vacation involves waking up, grabbing your gear, and getting to the slopes before your coffee fully kicks in, Big Sky Resort-area rentals should be high on your list.

Best for: Ski trips, first-time visitors, families taking ski lessons, couples who want resort convenience, and travelers who want to stay close to the action.

Beehive Basin & Cascade Ridge

Beehive Basin and Cascade Ridge are for travelers who want the “wow, Montana really does look like this” version of Big Sky.

This area offers incredible mountain views, a more secluded feel, and close access to outdoor recreation. Nearby Beehive Basin Trail is one of the area’s most loved hikes in the summer and a beautiful spot for snowshoeing or backcountry skiing in the winter. If you like your vacation with a side of quiet, scenery, and the occasional “let’s just sit here and look at that view for a minute,” this area delivers.

It’s not the most walkable or central option, but that’s part of the charm. Beehive Basin and Cascade Ridge are ideal for guests who care more about privacy, views, and access to trails than being steps from restaurants.

Best for: Quiet retreats, hiking-focused trips, outdoor lovers, couples, and travelers looking for a more private mountain escape.

Meadow Village

Meadow Village gives you a little bit of everything: restaurants, shops, community spaces, golf, cross-country skiing, and easier access to everyday essentials.

Located across Lone Mountain Trail from Town Center, Meadow Village is a convenient choice for guests who want to be close to activity without staying directly at the resort. In the summer, visitors can enjoy Big Sky’s Arnold Palmer-designed golf course. In the winter, the area offers access to groomed cross-country ski trails.

Meadow Village works especially well for travelers who want a more balanced trip. You can ski one day, shop or dine the next, head out for a hike, and still feel like you have a central home base.

Best for: Families, first-time visitors, golfers, cross-country skiers, and guests who want convenience without staying at the resort base.

Mid-Mountain

Mid-Mountain properties sit between Town Center and Big Sky Resort, which makes them a smart option for travelers who want access to both sides of the Big Sky experience.

You’re not fully in the resort bustle, and you’re not all the way down in Town Center. You’re somewhere in between, which can be exactly right if your itinerary includes skiing, dining, shopping, hiking, and relaxing at your rental.

This area is a great “split the difference” option for groups with mixed priorities. Maybe half your crew wants to hit the slopes early, while the other half wants a slower morning and a Town Center lunch. Mid-Mountain helps keep everyone reasonably close to what they want without turning the trip into a daily shuttle negotiation.

Best for: Mixed-activity trips, families, friend groups, and travelers who want convenient access to both the resort and Town Center.

Moonlight Basin

Moonlight Basin is where Big Sky gets a little extra dreamy.

Set on the backside of Lone Peak, Moonlight Basin offers luxurious private homes, wide open spaces, stunning views, and abundant wildlife. It’s a favorite for travelers looking for privacy, elevated amenities, and a true mountain-retreat feel. In the winter, some properties offer strong access to ski terrain. In the summer, the area feels peaceful, scenic, and wonderfully removed from the busier parts of town.

If your ideal stay includes big windows, quiet mornings, beautiful design, and a hot tub that makes you say “We should do this every year,” Moonlight Basin may be your match.

Best for: Luxury vacation rentals in Big Sky, couples, high-end family trips, ski-focused travelers, and guests who want privacy with polish.

Town Center

Town Center is one of the most convenient and community-focused places to stay in Big Sky.

Located about seven miles below Lone Mountain, Town Center is home to restaurants, shops, grocery stores, a movie theater, seasonal events, and local gathering spaces. In the summer, the weekly farmers market and Music in the Mountains concert series are major highlights. In the winter, Big Sky’s outdoor ice skating rink brings all the cozy small-town mountain energy.

Town Center is a great fit for guests who want walkability, restaurants nearby, and easy access to everyday conveniences. It’s not ski-in/ski-out, but for many travelers, the tradeoff is worth it.

Best for: First-time visitors, families, summer travelers, guests who want dining and shopping nearby, and anyone who wants a more community-centered stay.

How to Decide Where to Stay for Your Big Sky Vacation

Choosing from the best places to stay in Big Sky can feel overwhelming at first. There are mountain homes, condos, cabins, townhomes, resort-area rentals, and private retreats. The good news is that once you know what matters most for your trip, the decision gets much easier. Here’s how you can easily choose the best vacation rental for your escape to Big Sky:

Step 1: Account for Your Group Size

Start with the basics. How many people are coming, and how much space do you realistically need?

A couple may be perfectly happy in a cozy condo or small cabin. A family may need bunk rooms, laundry, and a kitchen that can handle post-ski appetites. A large group may need multiple living spaces, extra bathrooms, a big dining table, and enough room for everyone to be together without feeling like they’re living in a ski boot pile.

If you’re traveling with a group, look beyond the number of bedrooms. Pay attention to bathrooms, common areas, parking, gear storage, and whether the layout works for your actual people.

Because yes, “sleeps 12” and “comfortably fits 12 adults with ski gear and opinions about thermostat settings” are two different things.

Step 2: Think about Your Itinerary

Your itinerary should guide your location. If skiing is the whole point of the trip, look for vacation rentals near Big Sky Resort or ski-access properties that make mountain mornings easier. If hiking is your priority, areas near Beehive Basin, Cascade Ridge, or other trail-friendly locations may be a better fit. If you want mountain biking, summer events, dining, and easy access to town, Town Center or Meadow Village may make more sense.

Here’s a quick way to think about it:

  • For skiing, prioritize Big Sky Resort, Moonlight Basin, Mid-Mountain, or slope-access homes.
  • For hiking, consider Beehive Basin, Cascade Ridge, Moonlight Basin, or private homes with easy trail access.
  • For mountain biking, look for homes with gear storage, easy parking, and access to resort or local trail systems.
  • For a quiet retreat, focus on Moonlight Basin, Beehive Basin, Cascade Ridge, or private homes outside the main hubs.
  • For a community-focused stay, Town Center and Meadow Village are strong choices.

The best Big Sky vacation rental is the one that helps your trip flow naturally. Less driving, less confusion, more time doing the thing you came here to do.

Step 3: Consider What Style of Stay You Want

Some travelers want a luxury home with high-end finishes, mountain views, and a private hot tub. Others want a simple, cozy condo close to the action. Some want a cabin with rustic charm. Others want a custom home with room for the whole crew.

Two Pines Properties offers a range of Big Sky Montana vacation rentals, including condos, townhomes, cabins, and larger vacation homes. That variety matters because the “best” rental looks different for every traveler.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want luxury or simplicity?
  • Do I want to be close to the resort or tucked away?
  • Do I want a cabin feel, a condo setup, or a spacious custom home?
  • Do I need a hot tub, garage, laundry, or bunk room?
  • Do I want walkability, privacy, or direct activity access?

This is where the fun starts. You’re not just booking a place to sleep. You’re choosing the backdrop for the whole trip.

Step 4: Account for Personal or Family Needs

The little details make a big difference, especially for families and groups.

If you’re traveling with small children, look for rentals with kid-friendly layouts, bunk rooms, easy parking, laundry, and quick access to activities. If you’re traveling with older adults, pay attention to stairs and entryways. If your group has skiers and non-skiers, choose a location that gives everyone something to enjoy.

Amenities can also make or break the experience. A hot tub after skiing? Yes, please. A full kitchen for family dinners? Helpful. A garage for snowy mornings? Very helpful. A second living space for kids, teens, or the adults who need five minutes of quiet? Practically a vacation miracle.

Some Vacations, a Hotel Just Doesn’t Cut It

Hotels can be great for quick trips, simple stays, or travelers who like a traditional setup. But for many Big Sky vacations, a hotel room just doesn’t give you enough room to actually enjoy the trip.

Vacation rentals offer space, privacy, kitchens, living areas, laundry, and layouts that work better for families, couples, and groups. Instead of squeezing ski jackets, snacks, wet gloves, and tired humans into one room, you get a real home base.

A vacation rental lets you cook breakfast before the lifts open, pack lunches for a hike, gather around the fireplace after a long day, and enjoy downtime without feeling like everyone is stacked on top of each other.

What about a Booking Platform like Vrbo or Airbnb?

Large booking platforms can be useful for browsing, but they do not always give you the local context you need. In Big Sky, exact location matters. Winter access matters. “Close to the mountain” can mean different things. A locally managed vacation rental company can help you understand those details before you book, not after you arrive and realize your “easy access” requires a winter driving pep talk.

Explore the difference between booking Vrbo in Big Sky vs booking a local vacation rental.

Whatever your list looks like, we’ll help you sort through what is nice to have and what is truly worth prioritizing.

That local knowledge matters when you’re choosing between properties, especially if you’re trying to balance location, amenities, group size, and seasonal activities.

Local Management: The Secret to a Smooth Stay

When you book locally managed vacation rentals in Big Sky, you get more than a door code and a confirmation email.

You get a team that knows the area. You get honest guidance on location. You get support from people who understand winter roads, ski access, family logistics, and what travelers actually need when they arrive in Big Sky.

At Two Pines Properties, we help guests choose the right rental based on trip type, group size, location, and amenities. We can help you decide whether you should stay closer to the resort, near Town Center, somewhere quieter, or in a larger home that gives your whole group room to spread out.

Because no one wants to spend vacation saying, “Wait, should we have booked somewhere else?” We want you to feel confident before you arrive, comfortable while you’re here, and already planning your next trip before you leave.

What Does it Mean to be a “Locally-Owned Business?”

Being locally owned isn’t only about having a physical presence in Big Sky. It’s about being part of the community. So when we say we’re a locally owned business, we’re not talking about being a business that started in Montana but is now so large that it has no ties to the local community. We’re the real deal.

Two Pines Properties is Big Sky’s largest locally-owned and operated rental company with team members who live, work, and thrive in this community. Our co-owners Wes and Alex Hoecker are proud Big Sky residents who brave through our infamous snowstorms to pen hand-written cards to our guests (Watch this video if you don’t believe us). Our deep roots in the community allow us to offer a truly personalized experience, ensuring that every guest feels like part of our Big Sky family.

How We Live Up to the “Locally-Owned” Label

Our local connection enables our team to provide a level of care and attention to guests that larger, corporate competitors simply can’t match. From offering insider tips on the best trails in Yellowstone National Park to recommending family-friendly activities in and around the Big Sky area, our team members’ local expertise ensures every guest has a memorable stay, every rental is comfortable, and every reservation goes smoothly. So when you choose Two Pines, you’re not just renting a property—you’re gaining a trusted friend and local guide to all that Big Sky has to offer.

How You Benefit From Local Big Sky Vacation Rentals

To put it simply, staying with a locally owned vacation rental company means a better, more personalized Big Sky experience for you. At Two Pines Properties, our deep connection to the Big Sky community allows us to offer a level of care and service that sets us apart from corporate competitors. Our team is more than property managers. We’re your neighbors, guides, and trusted hosts who are here to make your trip exceptional in every way. Here’s what you get when you choose local vacation rentals with Two Pines Properties:

In Montana, hospitality is a way of life, and our team embodies that spirit. From the moment you book with Two Pines, you’ll feel the difference. We’re here to answer your questions, provide guidance, and ensure every aspect of your trip is seamless.

Whether it’s delivering firewood during a snowstorm or helping you book a last-minute reservation at a local favorite restaurant, we enjoy making your time in Big Sky unforgettable. It’s the little moments, like providing thoughtful suggestions tailored to your interests, that make your trip feel as welcoming as the community we call home.

2. No Long-Distance Relationships

Unlike big corporate rental companies, we don’t manage properties from hundreds of miles away. Our team lives and works right here in Big Sky, breathing the same crisp mountain air and enjoying the same breathtaking views that brought you here. This means we’re steeped in local knowledge and deeply connected to the community.

Because we’re local, we can respond quickly to your needs—whether it’s fixing a minor issue in your rental, recommending a dinner spot that fits your vibe, or sharing real-time updates on weather and conditions. You’re never left waiting for an answer from a distant call center.

3. Available On-Site Support

Things can come up while traveling, and having on-site support makes all the difference. At Two Pines, we’re here when you need us. Maybe you need help figuring out how to use the hot tub after a long day of skiing, or perhaps you’re curious about where to rent snowshoes for tomorrow’s adventure. Whatever the need, our team is just a call or a short drive away to ensure everything goes smoothly.

This on-site presence gives you peace of mind. If something unexpected happens—a power outage, a lost key, or even just needing a few extra blankets—you’re not left scrambling for help. Our team is here to ensure your vacation stays stress-free and enjoyable.

4. You Get the Insider Scoop

One of the best parts of staying with a locally owned company is access to the kind of insider knowledge you can’t get from a quick Google search. We love sharing our favorite Big Sky secrets, like the best time to hit the slopes for fewer crowds, the quietest trails for a morning snowshoe, or the coziest spot for après-ski cocktails.

We love helping you discover the hidden gems that make Big Sky feel like home. Think tucked-away cafes, family-owned restaurants, or local events that give you a true taste of Montana culture. These personalized tips help you experience Big Sky in a way that feels authentic and unique.

Why Call Big Sky Home on a Yellowstone National Park Vacation

One thing that can make or break any vacation is where you call home. This is especially true for anyone planning a vacation to Yellowstone National Park. This popular natural attraction is filled with endless adventure. Given its size, there are several towns to choose from when picking your base camp, and Big Sky should be at the top of your list. The local team at Two Pines Properties has first-hand knowledge of why our Montana town is your perfect option. Keep reading to learn more.

Variety of Area Amenities

Having a relaxing vacation rental to call home is only one piece of the puzzle regarding your Yellowstone vacation. After a long day of exploring the 2.2 million-acre park, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite. Luckily, Big Sky is home to countless restaurants to choose from, like Horn & Cantle, Buck’s T-4, and Ousel & Spur Pizza Co. You can also stop by a local grocery store like Roxy’s Market & Cafe to stock up on things to make a delicious meal in your Big Sky rental. If you’re looking to soothe your sore muscles, visit Solace Spa & Recovery Lounge or Raydient Bodywork for a massage.

Proximity to Park Entrances

Big Sky is only about 20 minutes from the park’s west boundary. However, it takes about an hour to reach the gate where you can purchase an entry pass. While this may seem like a bit of a drive, the stunning views make the journey worth it. This gives you plenty of time to map out your hikes and any other activities you’re hoping to enjoy. One thing we don’t recommend waiting to book on the drive is your outing with Backcountry Safaris, which offers both half-day and full-day excursions. You’ll want to reserve your spot on a tour around the same time you reserve your rental.

Variety of Big Sky Vacation Rentals to Choose From

The hot tub at a Big Sky rental to relax in on a Yellowstone National Park vacation.

One of the biggest reasons to make Big Sky your base camp is the incredible selection of rentals from Two Pines. Our inventory of well-appointed vacation properties has it all. Whether you’re looking for a cozy condo, a charming townhome, or a spacious home, we have just the place for you.

While all of our rentals have the comforts of home, one might fit your Yellowstone National Park vacation better than the others. We highly recommend choosing a rental with a hot tub, perfect for relaxing after going on a guided hike with Backcountry Safaris. Plan Your Visit to Big Sky PBR | Tickets, Schedules, & More

While Big Sky is known for its endless outdoor activities, it’s also home to a jam-packed calendar of events. From checking out incredible music festivals to trying delicious bites at a food festival, there’s something for everyone. One of the year’s most anticipated events is the Big Sky PBR. To help you make the most of your trip to this annual event, the team at Two Pines Properties has put together a guide with important information.

An Overview of the Schedule

For three days in July, some of the world’s best bull riders make their way to Big Sky for the annual Big Sky PRB. However, the fun isn’t limited to three days of riding. The yearly event features things to do that the whole community can enjoy.

Things kick off with the Community Rodeo and Community Street Dance. There’s also Bingo Night, a golf tournament, and more, all leading up to the highly anticipated bull riding nights.

There are three different nights of riding, with the championship night taking place on Saturday night. We recommend getting to the Big Sky Events Arena early to stock up on snacks and drinks.

An Unforgettable Montana Spring Break to Big Sky

Big Sky is the ideal destination for any family looking to create long-lasting memories. While the popular town attracts countless visitors during the winter months, there is no bad time of year to visit. Plan your visit to Big Sky with Two Pines Properties for a fun and unique Montana spring break escape.

No matter the age of your children, there’s no shortage of things to do in and around Big Sky that everyone will love. While this spring is sometimes referred to as the mud season, you can still get out and enjoy some of the top activities Big Sky is known for. Keep reading to learn more about what to include on your itinerary.

5 Things to Do in Big Sky on Spring Break

  1. Get in some last runs down the mountain. The mountain is usually open through the end of April, so you have plenty of time for end-of-season skiing. We recommend purchasing your lift tickets early.
  2. Book a spot on a wildlife tour to see what creatures you can spot in Yellowstone National Park. Backcountry Safaris offers full-day and half-day tours that take you around the park.
  3. If you aren’t afraid to get a little muddy, go biking in Yellowstone. Because the roads are still closed to cars, you’ll have the roadways to yourself.
  4. Try your hand at flyfishing on an excursion with Gallatin River Guides. Since 1984, this guide service has been offering year-round trips in world-class trout streams.
  5. See what you can find on a shopping spree. Both Big Sky Resort and Big Sky Center are home to several retailers that have you covered, from souvenirs to jewelry.

What Wildlife Can You See in Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky and the surrounding area are known for breathtaking views. Whether exploring a winter wonderland or a trail inside Yellowstone National Park, there are countless ways to discover Mother Nature’s beauty. One of the best things you can do on any outdoor adventure is keep your eyes open for animals that call this area home. To help you have a better idea of what you might spot, the team at Two Pines Properties has put together a list of wildlife in Montana you may stumble upon.

A Guide to 5 Animals You Can See in Yellowstone and Beyond

One of the best places to go wildlife viewing near your Big Sky rental is Yellowstone National Park. For anyone staying with us during the spring, you might just be able to catch a glimpse of babies! If you are out exploring, remember these are wild animals. While they may look cute and cuddly, you should not approach them. Read up on wildlife viewing tips to ensure your excursion is both fun and safe.

  • Bighorn sheep can be seen in several places throughout Yellowstone. During the summer, they frequent the slopes of Mount Washburn. Keep your eyes open as you drive into Big Sky, as you may see them along the roadways.
  • Herds of elk call the mountain meadows around Big Sky home. You can often hear the call of the bull elk. The best way to spot these creatures is by driving to the boundary of Yellowstone around dawn or dusk.
  • There are less than 200 moose in Yellowstone, which means spotting one is a special moment. Due to their coloring, it can be hard to spot these animals as they munch around the bushes or riverbeds on the outskirts of town.
  • When you think of Montana wildlife, one of the first things to come to mind is probably the North American bison. Yellowstone is the only place in the country that has had bison since prehistoric times. Over 5,000 bison were counted in the summer of 2022.
  • Black bears are commonly seen throughout the park but most often in the Mammoth and Tower areas. As these animals can climb trees, be sure to turn your eyes toward the treeline.
